Facebook introduced a new feature where you can download all of your posts, updates, etc. I figure it’s a good thing to do every once in awhile for Felix’s updates and stuff since Twitter just lost everyone’s tweets from the past couple years. So you can look back on it when Felix is like 17 and a drug addict. Kidding.

This data export was a terrible idea. It looks and sounds good for facebook’s image, but the implications aren’t worth it.
They’ve put this file out there. That’s done. If they remove the export file they look like huge dicks for removing a feature and going back on their word.
The file is out there for programmers like me to discover its format and how it might be fed into a “import your facebook to myspace” tool, where myspace could be any existing or new competitor to facebook.
facebook has 500 million users we’ve been told. Any facebook competitor can now convince users that the easiest way to sign up for their service is to download and import all their facebook data.
This will solve the chicken and egg problem for a lot of social networks–you can’t be popular unless all my friends are on your service. Now, the facebook file makes that process a lot easier to deal with.
Huge mistake.
Uh huh…
